VisDare – Beyond

“We should probably head back.”

“Come on, Kat, where’s your sense of adventure?”

“It’s right behind my sense of I-don’t-want-to-get-fired.”

“I’m serious, Mike. We’re way past the Boundary. Rules are clear not to cross it.”

“Let’s just see what’s on the other side of that uphill climb then we’ll head back. I promise.”

We marched upwards. We hang on to branches and vines and pulled ourselves up. When we reached the top, standing in the middle of two massive rosewood trees, all words left our lips.

“Is that a–” Mike said after a while.

“House,” I finished. “One of those houses in the old Earth books.”

Mike started to slide down the dirt.

“Where are you going?”

“Where do you think I’m going? I’m going inside that thing.”

“We should call it in. The uppers would want to know about–”

Mike stopped, noticed the abrupt end in my sentence, and looked at me. “Kat?”

“I think I saw someone in the uppermost window.”

Mike looked, hand in his stunner holstered across his chest.

“Call it in,” he said.
